Post subject:  Bluetooth communication between 2 EV3 robots

I am a beginner to EV3, and I am now building two EV3 robots to compete in Robocup open league soccer game.

I am thinking about if the two robots can communicate via bluetooth, so once the defense robot gets the ball and dribbles forward, the offense robot goes back and defends the goal. So basically the two robots will switch between defense and offense. Is this feasible with bluetooth communication? I am not sure if the bluetooth between 2 EV3 is reliable.

There is one more concern that during the game the communication might be disrupted by other signals in the area (hundreds of robots compete). Does anyone have experience with this situation before?

There is currently no ROBOTC support for inter-robot communication through BT for the EV3, I'm afraid.

Is there a schedule, even approximate, as to when there may be BT support for inter-EV3
communications? Maybe for 2 robots, master, slave, at first, and then for 3 or 4 robots
later? Thanks for any info.

It's on the list of future enhancements, but no fixed or approximate date yet.

Is it possible with installing xbee radios on both robots instead of using BT?

No, the NXTBee sensors you can buy from Dexter Industries require RS485, which the EV3 is not capable of. If you have ones that can do I2C at a clock speed of about 10KHz, then it's theoretically possible.

So you mean this is possible with NXT?

I can use NXT instead of EV3.

Yeah, you will have to get two of these. If you already have the XBees, you can buy just the carrier board.
