i guess both, but the joystick>laptop> wirless communication to the NXT would be FANTASTIC anbd preferable

You have many threads in this forum so I am not sure if you are asking about moving the robot around with the joystick or swinging the arm up and down with the joystick. In any case, there are plenty of code posted in your other threads. If you still have specific questions, please post the question with more details on what you are asking.
