If you don't want to program in graphically language and want to just program in C, hold off buying the EV3. RobotC is not ready for it yet. I don't know how much longer before RobotC will support EV3. I wouldn't be surprise if it is closer to a year from now.

1. I guess the the version I will be able to order in few days is the retail one. Correct?

Yes.

2. Do I need to buy a special software to operate it? I don't want to even start using the GUI interface I saw for the previous NXT. What s/w does it use? what comes with it?

The software currently available for it is LabView, a graphical programming language.

3. I saw all your linux discussion above and I am a bit worried :-( . I don't want to get into that. I just want a robot with an interface that I can use to program (like in C) and build my own machines with my own software. Is that possible ? Will the RobotC enable that or I must be an expert in linux? Can you please make some order for me?

The OS on the EV3 is Linux but it should be transparent to the user (i.e. you don't need to know about it) unless you want to hack it. Since RobotC is implemented using VM, it should be able to hide all the details of the OS from you although I wouldn't mind if they add some APIs that allows me to call the kernel natively :) But that's just my wish.

You mean LavView itself, or LEGO's software built-onto LabView? You can download the retail software from LEGO now.

There is a nice overview on LAbView in youTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em5R_RM8E08
(there are more sections).

Is that the exact one used by EV3?
Indeed this is the only option to operate the robot now? (until robotC will be available)

so for the EV3 retail - I guess I get it ? (no need to buy seperatly?)

Thanks,
Amit

The EV3 retail set does come with software. You can download it here if you want to see what it's like. http://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/do ... edownload/

Also, the latest test releases of NXC have some support for the EV3.

The software said its LabVIEW, but it doesn't look like the tradition LabVIEW I used before. So I suppose it is some sort of LEGO looking interface on top of LabVIEW.

The Lego EV3 SW is LabView based, but the IDE (GUI, tools, etc) is specifically for use with Lego Mindstorms (EV3 and NXT). It's basically a (much needed) upgrade from NXT-G.

When's RobotC for the EV3 supposed to come out? I'm anxious. :)

If I'm not mistaken, http://bricxcc.sourceforge.net/ seems to imply support for EV3s? ("Bricx Command Center [...] is a 32-bit Windows program [...] for programming LEGO MINDSTORMS robots from all generations of the MINDSTORMS family, including the third generation EV3" [emphasis mine])

Hmm... I'm not so sure. :o

Post subject:  Re: new EV3

One more thing: Does the EV3 comes with some basic building instruction for simple robot for initial learning?
Something basic that is not one of the big robots they suggest (snake,...)

I also look at: http://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/pr ... bots/ev3d4
They suggest bunos robots but the file to download is of type .ev3 . What is that?
Is that for the dedicated software?

Thanks,
Amit

The LabVIEW software comes with build instructions on a number of projects. Also for the Education Core Set, it came with an instruction manual that builds a simple tribot with a scooper (see the picture in this thread).

EV3 support is being added to BricxCC. Currently there is a small amount of support in the latest test releases, and John Hansen is actively working on adding more support.

Great. While on BrickCC, What sound and image file extensions does EV3 use? :) :) :)
