Status of outstanding bugs on Mantis
I would like to know what the status is of the following bugs that I reported on Mantis:
0000248: [1.43Beta 1] Cannot have multiple files including the same file
(reported 16 Sep 08)
0000246: Missing operator ^=
(reported 14 Sep 08)
0000220: I2C bus not reset when program exits
(reported 13 Jul 08)
0000221: I2 Coding Examples.c causes compiler error.
(reported 13 Jul)
The only change I see on those bug reports is that they have been assigned to Dick. There has been no feedback of any kind and all of them still have the resolution status set to "open".
Bug fixing is vital to improving a product and it depends very heavily on users taking the time to submit the reports. If you want the users to take this seriously, you, as developers, need to take this system seriously, too. Users want feedback, the bug system can't be some information black hole. If a bug is low priority, state as much in a note in the bug so at least we know. If you're working on it, let us know, too. Your experienced users are most likely to submit the bugs as they know the true value of bug reports (and try weird stuff the developers never thought anyone would). However, they're also going to be the ones that want the most (technical) feedback. When people report a bug on the forums, how can we, with a straight face, encourage them to use the Mantis bugzilla system instead, when the developers themselves don't seem to be using it to its full capacity?
I am only going to talk about my own bug reports but this is not the first time a topic like this has come up. It seems the recurring theme is lack of feedback and communication. If you stop communicating with the users, they will eventually just stop telling you ways you could improve your product, because they won't care anymore. No (commercially successful) software product can be developed in a vacuum. Your users are your life blood.
