Post subject:  Send and receive data through cortex remote port

I need to send data back and forth between a computer and the vex cortex controller through its wireless remote joystick.

I am looking for getChar() and sendChar() functionality that works through the prolific serial interface when connected to the programming port of the remote joystick.

Or writeDebugStream() functionality that can work with a program other than RobotC's debugger. When monitoring the prolific serial port the writeDebugStream() data is not sent unless the robot is in debug mode. As a feature it buffers the data until the debugger is connected.

Can someone please tell me the secret?
Thanks.

Hi goeckerd,

What is it you're trying to accomplish, exactly, and why can't you use the writeDebugStream command with the robot in Debug mode? I would say that the writeDebugStream command is your best bet.

The getChar and sendChar currently only work over the UART ports on the Cortex.

I need a custom program running on the computer to interact with the robot.

Communication between a robot and PC is done all the time with the NXT controllers. We need this functionality for the VEX Cortex.

My students have lots of great ideas for projects that involve controlling a robot or multiple robots through a computer.
Please don't make me spend the time reverse engineering the debugger interface to get some of this functionality.
