UPDATE (9/19): We have a new installer that should solve all of these issues. Please download the new installer here. (Works for both 32/64bit with the same installer)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone,

We're actively working with National Instruments to solve the new NXT driver issue causing ROBOTC to crash. It seems to be that the new installers do not have all of the dependencies required to properly use the fantom.DLL communication library.

We have discovered a work around however, so please use the following steps to get your copy of ROBOTC up and running.

* Step 1: Uninstall any LEGO NXT USB Driver you currently have installed.
Image

* Step 2: Download and Install the older version of the LEGO NXT USB driver:
32-bit: http://www.robotc.net/files/NXT_32bit_driver_old.zip
64-bit: http://www.robotc.net/files/NXT_64bit_driver_old.zip

* Step 3: Download and Install the new version of the LEGO NXT USB driver:
32-bit: http://www.robotc.net/files/NXTUSBDriver_32bit.zip
64-bit: http://www.robotc.net/files/NXTUSBDriver_64bit.zip

* Step 4: Make sure you are running ROBOTC 3.02 or later.
Current Version (3.02): http://www.robotc.net/files/ROBOTCforMINDSTORMS_302.exe

This should solve the issue. Thanks for everyone patient in working with this problem. We do hope to have a new version of the driver in the future that will solve this problem without the workaround.

Update (9/18): Information about the issues. We hope to have a new installer that will fix the Fantom issues sometime this week.

Quote:
We have found the root of the issue and will have a solution soon.

It turns out that two registry keys were missing in the (fantom) 1.2.0 installer. These keys are common to many NI products, which made finding the issue more painful than usual - installing anything to debug the problem would usually fix it.

On a 64 bit machine, the offending keys are:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\National Instruments\Common\Installer
NIPUBAPPDATADIR
NISHAREDMEMORYDIR

I tried your way around the fantom.dll error and it didn't work. We are using XP and the new driver will not load. Robotc also keeps crashing. Any more ideas.

Make sure you expand the USB drivers from the ZIP file before trying to install. They do not seem to install properly if run directly from the ZIP.

I was having the same issues. I found I had to manually delete the C:\\VXIPNP directory before I could install either the old drivers or the new ones.

Do the instructions above work for RobotC v2.0.2? That is the only one I have purchased a classroom license for so I can't upgrade to v3 without a significant cost for our school. Hopefully the new intaller mentioned with the fantom.dll fix will cover this version. My issue is on Win7 where the NXT driver installs successfully but then RobotC behaves as if it isn't installed when communication is opened with the NXT over USB.

Yes, this should fix the issues with 2.02 as well. The new Fantom driver is backwards compatible.

Has the new 1.20 installer been tested on Windows Starter Edition?

For the old fantom driver installers, it was necessary to put the line "AllowWindowsStarter=1" in the [OS] section of the setup.ini file.
You might notify National Intruments about that, or you might want to put the line in your driver's setup.ini file.
