Is it possible to completely turn off a (standard or continuous, standard right now though) servo in the middle of a program, such that it wouldn't retain its old position and would just go with the flow, so to speak? If necessary, turning off the entire servo controller would be fine - the part in question is being used to hang, so once we're doing that we're done with any other servos. However, the proposed hanging mechanism would rotate a servo in an unpredictable manner (driver-dependent, we'd likely destroy multiple servos before finding a function that worked), so we'd love to be able to turn it off and just let the servo rotate with the motor that's raising the robot.

Continuous rotation servos actually don't hold their position. So, as long as you use one of those, you should be fine, as long as you don't put to much stress on the servo while it rotates freely.
