Post Importing Line Following Tiles in RVW Level Builder
Hi,

Is it possible to import/create your own line following tiles using the Model importer?

Thanks,

Hi Coda,
This isn't currently an officially-supported feature of Model Importer since the STL file format that it accepts can only assign a single color to each geometric face of the object*. It's on our to-do list to add more file formats, including those with more control over the surface coloring of the objects, but we have other features and projects with higher priority so this probably won't happen for a while still.

In the mean time, I've attached a small program that should allow you to import tiles for level builder by supplying an image. The width and height parameters are given in virtual meters (relative to the scale of the NXT and VEX robots), so values like 0.2 would be reasonable. This program is quite minimalist, so if you want to place the model into a specific category, apply startpoint/goalzone/checkpoint functionality, etc, you'll have to import the tile with this program, then launch Model Importer to adjust the model parameters.

Best,

* It's conceivably possible that you could use 3D modeling software to create the tile's decal out of a bunch of faces painted different colors, sorta like a mosaic, but this is quite a bit more difficult than it should be.

Sorry for reviving an old post. But how do you use the tile importer. I can import an image file into the Tile importer ok. But when I click on save nothing seems to happen. Does it generate a file that then can be imported? if so where is the file saved?

Hi,
I just happened to see this thread today and had the same trouble looking for the file. After tinkering a bit more, I found out that the image is exported to the RVW Level Builder library. When you open the RVW Model Importer, select Model Pack = Custom and Model Type = Tiles and you should see your new tiles.

Good Luck.
