How would you use a gyroscope to do what a encoder does?

I am trying to use a gyroscope to find the distance moved, and I don't have any encoder. How could I find the distanced moved and use that to drive the robot more accurately that by using time?

A gyro can measure the angular velocity, ie how fast something is turning in degrees per second. How do you propose to use this data to measure linear displacement? You could conceivably do this with an accelerometer, but it would not be trivial. It would involve a fair amount of math.
