Post pololu item 1373 and vex Cortex
I am trying to use the cortex to operate a 'big' non-vex motor and I am trying to use a motor controller from pololu (item number 1373). I have already fried one motor controller due to my lack of skills. Has anyone done something like this before? I need some help!
thank you in advance.

That should work well with the VEX Cortex.
What voltage supply and motor are you using with the motor controller?
Maybe you could provide a schematic of how it is connected?

Leave the BEC jumper OFF.
Connect your 12V battery + terminal to the VIN terminal on the motor controller
Connect your 12V battery - terminal to the GND terminal on the motor controller
Connect one motor lead to the OUTA terminal on the motor controller
Connect the other motor lead to the OUTB terminal on the motor controller
Connect RC1 on the motor controller to one of the CORTEX 8 PWM motor ports PWM wire
Connect RC-GND on the motor controller to one of the CORTEX 8 PWM motor ports 0V wire

WOW!! Exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for. Thank you!!

Merci CARBOT

I am able to control my motor(s) with my computer (usb cable) but not through the cortex PWM wire. I connected motor 2 (on the cortex) to the RC receiver on the motor controller (power, gnd and pwm) .
On the pololu computer interface, I can control from the status window the speed and direction of the motor but I have not yet succeeded in using the vex and robot C.
Could you offer more assisstance with that please? Have you done something like that before?
I did it, I just had to change the baud rate to 19200 on the input setting window. The only remaining problem (now that I can use a VEX program) is that when my cortex is untethered, the program does not launch. I did not have that issue in the past...

Try the following:
- Open the ROBOT drop down menu
- Select VEX Cortex communication mode
- Check USB ONLY
